As part of Queensland Small Business Month this May, the Capricornia Chamber of Commerce was proud to host an insightful panel event in Rockhampton, bringing together four dynamic local business leaders — Kirsty Carvey (Galactic Donuts), Brad Johnston (My Local IT Guy), Celeste Cleary (Flourishing Wellness), and Gavin Shuker (multi-business owner and community sports leader) — with Brad Villiers facilitating.
In a relaxed and engaging Q&A format, the discussion covered everything from business transitions and leadership to community giving, staff management and mental health.
A standout message echoed by all speakers was the importance of asking for help and surrounding yourself with mentors. Business may feel isolating, but support is often just a coffee and a conversation away.
Panelists also opened up about what keeps them awake at night — from rostering and perfectionism to the emotional weight of responsibility. Yet they balance the chaos with restorative activities: archery, farm life, sport, or just a laugh with friends.
On the topic of giving back, each panellist highlighted the importance of community — supporting causes, coaching junior sport, or donating time and services to those doing it tough.
There were no PowerPoint slides or corporate scripts — just honest, heartful discussion from people doing the work and living the reality of small business. We’re grateful to our panellists and attendees for making this event such a meaningful highlight of Small Business Month.
